Sunday's Obituary - Mrs. Nancy E. Yawman

Nancy E. Yawman, one of my maternal great-grandmothers, died on July 14, 1919. Her obituary provided information about her religious affiliation, something I did not know. I found it interesting that they printed information on when her body was shipped from the place of death (Miami, Oklahoma) to the burial location (Parsons, Kansas) and that her son accompanied the body.

“MRS. NANCY YAWMAN BURIED IN PARSONS

Mrs. Nancy E. Yawman, who died at the home of her son John Yawman Tuesday, was buried in Parsons, Wednesday afternoon. The body was shipped Tuesday. John Yawman accompanied the body to Parsons.

Mrs. Yawman has been a member of the Baptist church here and is well known. Her 73d birthday was celebrated at the home about four weeks ago.”

Sunday's Obituary - Margaret H. Roberts (1896-1957)

For the last few months, I have been transcribing the obituaries that my paternal grandmother, Mamie Olive (Martindale) Spurlock, had saved in her scrapbook. This last obituary puzzled me. All the other obituaries were for immediate family, but I couldn’t identify this person—Margaret H. (Lashly) Roberts. So off I went to research her and see what I could find.

My first search was for a death certificate on FamilySearch; success! I found that Margaret was born 25 December 1896 in Missouri, the daughter of [—?—] Lashley and Sarah Robinson, and that she died on 26 November 1957 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, where she had lived for 30 years. Her mother’s maiden name of Robinson rang a bell because I knew that A.B. Martindale (my great-grandfather) had been married to Zilla Robinson prior to his marriage to my great-grandmother Sarah Belle Forshee.

I next searched Missouri marriages on FamilySearch to see if I could find her parents’ marriage. I found a Sarah J. Robinson who married James J. Lashley on 2 December 1882 in Iron, Missouri (an area where my Martindale and Forshee ancestors had lived).

I turned next to the federal census. I found Maggie Lashly (born Dec 1896 in Missouri) living with her mother Sarah (widowed, born April 1860 in Missouri) and the siblings named in her obituary in Concord, Washington County, Missouri, on the 1900 census. I then found Sarah Robinson, age 20, in the 1880 census living with her parents Wm. (born about 1838 in Missouri) and Margareth (born about 1840 in Tennessee) in Concord, Washington County, Missouri. Sarah (age 2/12) was listed in the 1860 census in Concord, Washington County, in the household of Thomas W. and Margaret Robinson.

Back to Missouri marriage records! Thomas W. Robinson married Margaret Forshee on 2 April 1857 in Washington County, Missouri. Margaret was the sister of my great-grandmother Sarah Belle Forshee.

Voila! This obituary was for a relative like all the others in the scrapbook. Margaret Lashly Roberts was the first cousin once removed of my grandmother.

“MARGARET H. ROBERTS, 60, of 1127 West 30th Ave died 8:30 AM Tuesday in her home. Survivors: Sons, Lee S. and Louis H. Roberts, both of Houston; brothers, Benton Lashly, Port Arthur, Clyde and Tom Lashly, both of Lufkin; sister, Mrs. Ethel Perry, Lufkin; four grandchildren. Sunday's Obituary - George Gandy (1836-1903)

Two obituaries have surfaced for George W. Gandy, my first cousin 4 times removed; both are transcribed below. I was unable to verify the statements in the first obituary, published by the Marysville (Ohio) Tribune, that George served as mayor of two towns in DeWitt County, Illinois—Kenney and Clinton. I posted a query on the Ancestry.com message board seeking confirmation of these statements; Judy Simpson graciously transcribed an obituary she found in the Clinton Register. That obituary contains no reference to his serving as mayor of either town.

“GRIM REAPER
——
Takes Off Native of Union County in Far Away Oklahoma.
——
The recent death of George Gandy, at Lexington, Oklahoma, is of more than passing interest to many of the older residents of Union county. He was the youngest son of Abijah Gandy who helped to clear Leesburg township out of the primeval forest, and for many years was identified with the early history of Union county.

The son, George Gandy, went to Illinois where he rose into prominence, serving as mayor of Clinton and also mayor of Kenny. He moved to Oklahoma three years ago. His body was brought back to Clinton, Illinois, for burial which took place under the auspices of Henderson lodge, A. F. & A. M. of Kenny, Illinois. The deceased was an uncle of L. Meacham, of Woodstock, and was also related to the Clevengers and others about Pharisburg. He was about 75 years of age at his death.”

Sunday's Obituary - Ephraim Cary (1790-1878)

Very little biographical information about my 3rd great-grandfather Ephraim Cary is provided in this obituary. He served in the War of 1812, married Matilda Gandy in 1818 in Madison County, and was the father of 9 children, including Rhoda (Cary) Franklin, my 2nd great-grandmother. His earliest recorded land purchase was in 1829; the deed is transcribed here. He is believed to be buried in Maskill Cemetery in Union County, Ohio, but attempts to find a gravestone have been unsuccessful.

I am indebted to Virginia (Ginny) Smith, a researcher from Union County, Ohio, who provided this copy of his obituary.

Marysville Tribune, Marysville, Ohio, 25 December 1878.

"OBITUARY.

Sunday's Obituary - Alexander Gandy (1832-1919)

Alexander Gandy, my maternal 2nd cousin, 3 times removed, is the subject of an ongoing research project which I wrote about here and here. I continue to collaborate with another researcher to try to solve the mysteries surrounding Tamson (Cary) (Gandy) Kirby, Alexander’s first wife.

“TAPS SOUNDED FOR CIVIL WAR VETERAN
———
Alexander Gandy, Who Marched With Sherman to the Sea, Dies at Dayton at age of 87.
———
In writing of the death of a former resident of Richwood, the Dayton Journal of July 10, said:

'He is survived by two daughters, Miss Ida Gandy and Mrs. George Gengnagel, of Dayton, and a granddaughter, Mrs. P. D. Yarbrough, of Clinton, Ill.

'Mr. Gandy had been a resident of Dayton for more than 20 years. He was a soldier in one of the most active regiments of the Civil war, under Col. A. B. Robinson, 121 O. V. L, in Co. I, and with the 121st was mustered into service at Delaware, O., Sept. 11, 1862, and served until June 8, 1865, when they were mustered out at Washington, D.C.

'The regiment participated in the battles of Chicamaugua, Lookout mountain, Mission Ridge, Kenesaw mountain. He marched with Sherman to the sea and also had a part in the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, the last battle of the war.

'He was wounded in battle of Mission Ridge, but in a short time rejointed [sic] the regiment.'

Many of the older residents of Richwood will remember Mr. Gandy, was a brick and tile manufacturer years ago. He made the brick for the Blake residence, now owned by W. H. Richards; the Odd Fellows building; the grade school building and others.

Sunday's Obituary - David Franklin (1867-1932)

David Franklin was the youngest child of Joseph and Rhoda (Cary) Franklin, my maternal 2nd great-grandparents, making him my great-granduncle. He was the mayor of Magnetic Springs, a village in Union County, Ohio; I have not yet found any information about his term in office. I did, however, find that he served as assessor in 1910. The date of birth in his obituary is likely inaccurate. Although the information in the obituary and his death certificate are the same, the informant was someone named Arthur Petty, whose relationship to David Franklin is unknown. The month and year of David’s birth were reported as January 1867 in the 1900 federal census and that year is consistent with his age as reported in every federal census on which he was enumerated.

“Former Magnetic Mayor Succumbs
———
Death Follows Operation at Jane Case Hospital — Funeral is Held Sunday Afternoon
———
David Franklin, 67, of Magnetic Springs, died Thursday, December 29, at the Jane M. Case hospital, Delaware, following an operation for hernia, to which he had submitted three days previous to his demise. He was formerly mayor of Magnetic Springs and was engaged in business there for many years.

Mr. Franklin was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Franklin, and was born in Ohio, October 15, 1865. He was never married.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Kimbal Sunday afternoon, January 1, at two o'clock in the Winter chapel. Burial was made in Maple Dell cemetery, in charge of Lloyd Winter & Son.”
