2012 Genealympics - Event 3 - Back Up Your Data!

On July 28th, Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings announced the opening of the 2012 SNGF (Saturday Night Genealogy Fun) Genealympics; see his post here for more info on this fun way to share the results of your genealogical research.

The Flag of Me

Today's event - the "Back Up Your Data!" event from the 2008 Genea-Blogger Games:

Backup data to choice of formats (flash drives, CDs, DVDs, online) or storing hard copies properly (safety deposit box, safe, etc.).
A. Prepare a comprehensive backup plan for your digital research files and a security plan for your hard copies and photos
B. Secure your hard copies and photos in waterproof containers
C. Backup all your data using a flash drive, an external drive, CDs, DVDs, or an online resource
D. Have all your hard copies and photos scanned and secure them either in a fire-proof safe or offsite in a safety-deposit box/secure environment
E. All your data is backed up digitally and secured physically and you can recover from any disaster while losing only one month or less worth of research

Qualifications for "Back Up Your Data!":
Complete Task A - Bronze Medal
Complete Task B - Silver Medal
Complete Task C - Gold Medal
Complete Task D - Diamond Medal
Complete Task E - Platinum Medal

Having suffered the consequences of not having adequate back-ups for my genealogy data in the past, I opened a Dropbox account a couple years ago. But still there were important photos and some documents and folders that were not backed up there.

Today I went through the Documents and Picturies libraries on my hard drive and moved all the remaining genealogical documents, folders and photos to My Dropbox. Now I can say with confidence that all my digital data is secure! I just have to get it all organized. And work on a plan for the hard copies….

Task C Completed – Another GOLD medal!

2012 Genealympics - Event 2 - Ancestors' Challenge

On July 28th, Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings announced the opening of the 2012 SNGF (Saturday Night Genealogy Fun) Genealympics; see his post here for more info on this fun way to share the results of your genealogical research.

The Flag of Me

My second event is the ancestors’ challenge that Randy described as follows:
Pick one of your ancestral surnames, or one of your spouse's ancestral surnames. How many generations back from the last person with that surname in your ancestry have you researched, identified and accept as your ancestor?  [Note:  if you are doing your own surname, don't count yourself).

Medal Awards:

*  Bronze:  at least 4 generations
*  Silver:  at least 6 generations
*  Gold: at least 8 generations
*  Diamond:  at least 10 generations
*  Platinum:  at least 12 generations

Because I used one of my paternal lines for the descendants’ challenge, I decided to use one of my maternal ancestral surnames for this one. I chose YAWMAN, my mother’s maiden name. My mom’s ancestral line is as follows:

Beaulah Belle Yawman, daughter of
William Lea Yawman, son of
Michael Heman Yawman, son of
Andrew Yawman, son of
Philip Jamann, son of
Jacques Jamann.

That’s FIVE generations back from my mom!
A BRONZE medal!

2012 SNGF Genealympics - Event 1 - Descendants

Earlier today, Randy Seaver announced the opening of the 2012 SNGF (Saturday Night Genealogy Fun) Genealympics; see his post here for more info on this event.

The Flag of Me

My first event is the descendants' challenge that Randy described as follows:
Pick any one of your 16 great-great-grandparents, or one of your spouse's 16 great-great-grandparents.  How many descendants of that person do you have in your family tree records or database?  (Hint, a Descendants Report in your genealogy software should easily provide this number).

Medal Awards:

*  Bronze:  over 50 descendants
*  Silver:  over 100 descendants
*  Gold: over 150 descendants
*  Diamond:  over 200 descendants
*  Platinum:  over 250 descendants

Since I was working on my paternal 2nd great-grandfather James Forshee earlier today, I decided to use him for this event. Of his seven known children, three sons died during the Civil War without issue, so I was surprised to find that

I have 156 descendants of James Forshee in my database!
Woo hoo! A GOLD medal!

I really enjoy doing descendancy research, but have not spent too much time on this particular family line. Need to add that to the list of things to do!

I'll be posting about other events during the next two weeks.

2012 SNGF Genealympics - The Flag of Me

In the spirit of the 2012 Olympics just starting in London, Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings has announced the 2012 SNGF (Saturday Night Genealogy Fun) Genealympics! For more on the events, click here.

For my first event, I chose flag creation. Here is the Flag of Me!

I am proud to be an American and to display my home country's flag across the top; my most recent immigrant ancestor came to the United States in 1832 so this has been our home for a long time!

The country flags across the bottom represent my heritage, discovered either through research or through analysis of my DNA:

  • United Kingdom - original home of James Chilton, my Mayflower ancestor (maternal)
  • Ireland - a DNA clue, suspected to be from my paternal Caskey ancestors (paternal)
  • Finland - a DNA clue, suspected to be from the unidentified wife of Thomas Gandy, Jr. (maternal)
  • Iceland - a DNA clue, not sure about this one
  • Norway - another DNA clue, not sure about this one either
  • France - my most recent immigrant ancestor Andrew Yawman came from Alsace-Lorraine (maternal); although the family considered themselves German, when Andrew naturalized, he denounced his allegiance to the King of France
  • Wales - ancestral home of my Eaton ancestors (paternal)

I haven't yet chosen my second Genealympics event - stay tuned!

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #22 - James Forshee

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My paternal 2nd great-grandfather James Forshee was born 25 December 1810[1] in Tennessee[2]. His parents are believed to be John Forshee and Agnes Weston.

On 15 September 1830, he married Sarah Parker,[3] probably in Monroe County, Tennessee. The couple had seven known children:

George J. Forshee (Abt 1830[4]-1903[5])
Richard Forshee (1834-1905)[6]
John H. Forshee (Abt 1836[7]-1864)[8]
Benjamin Thomas Forshee (1838-1865)[9]
Margaret Forshee (1840-1917)[10]
Joseph F. Forshee (Abt 1842[11]-1863[12])
Sarah Belle Forshee (1856-1923)[13] – my great-grandmother

James was born, raised, married, and fathered his oldest children in Monroe County, Tennessee. Sometime before the mid-1850s, he moved his family to Missouri, settling in the southeast part of the state. He was a miller[14] in Tennessee and a farmer in Missouri.[15]

James and all of his sons served the Union during the conflict, either in the Enrolled Missouri Militia or the 32nd Missouri Infantry. The family lived in an area of Missouri that was plagued by guerrilla activity; see the post Death Threats in Southeast Missouri for more on how it affected my ancestors in the area.

The Civil War took a great toll on the Forshee family. Two of the five sons died of disease during the Civil War: Joseph, the youngest, died of consumption in Vicksburg;[16] John died of consumption also, while at home in Washington County, Missouri.[17] Benjamin died in February 1865 and is buried in Washington County; I have not yet been able to locate more information about his death.

James died 28 June 1878 and is buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Washington County, Missouri.[18]

I would like to learn more about James’ life both in Missouri and Tennessee. I have searched for deeds without little deeds; however, the surname FORSHEE is spelled many different ways and another search may be in order to look for alternate spellings. I would like to do some newspaper research, but need to make a list of newspapers of the area and see if any have been digitized. From an acquaintance who lived in St. Francois County, I understand there are still many Forshee descendants in the area; I need to see if I can find some living cousins!

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #21 – Mary Elizabeth Eaton

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My paternal 2nd great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Eaton was born about 1817 in Missouri,[1] probably Washington County. Her parents were Absolem D. Eaton and Sarah Reeves.

On 9 August 1838, she married Howell B. Martindale in Bismarck, St. Francois County, Missouri.[2] The couple had nine, perhaps ten, children. The nine children for whom I have found records are:
  • William C. Martindale (1839[3]-1863[4])
  • Lucinda J. Martindale (1841[5]-bef 1880)
  • Ambrose B. Martindale (1844[6]-1918[7]) – my great-grandfather
  • Permelia A. Martindale (1846[8]-1888[9])
  • Sarah V. Martindale (1849[10]-1900[11])
  • Howell B. Martindale (1852[12]-1889[13])
  • Missouri Elizabeth Martindale (1853[14]-1943[15])
  • James Austin Martindale (1856[16]-1892[17])
  • Randolph B. Martindale (1859[18]-?)

In 2002, I received an email from Nedra Eaton Queen who said there was another son, Bridges Bruce Martindale, who was born about 1838. However, I have found no other evidence of this child.

According to a pedigree chart prepared by my aunt, Dorothy Belle (Spurlock) Magee, her husband died in 1866 near Waldron, in Scott County, Arkansas. I have been unable to locate a burial location or any other documentation regarding his death.

In 1870, Mary Elizabeth Martindale was enumerated in Concord Township, Washington County, Missouri.[19] Living with her were all her children except William (died during the Civil War) and Lucinda (married and living with her husband Samuel/Sampson Blankenship[20]. Also enumerated with the family was John Thompson, husband of daughter Sarah. Mary’s occupation was listed as keeping house; no values were given for either real or personal property. Her two oldest sons Ambrose and Howell (enumerated as Hart) worked in the zinc mines. The younger children (Missouri, James and Randolph) had attended school within the year. She was enumerated just two visits away from the family of James Forshee (another of my 2nd great-grandparents); James’s daughter Sarah Belle would marry Ambrose Martindale in 1879.

According to email correspondent Nedra Eaton Queen, Mary died 11 January 1873 and is buried in Bismarck, St. Francois County, Missouri. I have been unable to verify this information.

Although I will continue to look for information about Mary, it is unlikely that there will be much to find in official records since it appears she did not own property. Perhaps newspapers from the area will provide further information. Or someday I will find a distant cousin who can tell me more about Mary Elizabeth Eaton Martindale and her life.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Eastern Star Membership Card

Gram (Mamie Olive Martindale Spurlock) was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Button Mountain Chapter No. 368, located in Cushing, Texas, as shown on the card below:

My grandparents were married in Cushing, Texas, in 1905, but by 1917, my grandfather was in California and my grandmother was living in Houston. The way her name is printed on the card would indicate she was a divorcee. I don't know when my grandparents divorced, but I suspect it was not until sometime in the late 1920s. I need to see if I can find out if she maintained her membership in the Button Mountain Chapter throughout her life.

The following small card was attached behind the card above. I have no clue as to its meaning or purpose! If one of my readers has any idea about what it might be, I hope they will let me know.

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #20 – Howell Brewer Martindale

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My paternal 2nd great-grandfather Howell Brewer Martindale was born about 1814[1] in Moore County, North Carolina.[2] His parents are unknown. I believe he may be the son of either Samuel or William Martindale, both of whom were enumerated in Moore County in 1820 with a male living in his household of the right age range to be Howell.

On 9 August 1838, he married Mary Elizabeth Eaton in Bismarck, St. Francois County, Missouri.[3] The couple had nine, perhaps ten, children. The nine children for whom I have found records are:
  • William C. Martindale (1839[4]-1863[5])
  • Lucinda J. Martindale (1841[6]-bef 1880)
  • Ambrose B. Martindale (1844[7]-1918[8]) – my great-grandfather
  • Permelia A. Martindale (1846[9]-1888[10])
  • Sarah V. Martindale (1849[11]-1900[12])
  • Howell B. Martindale (1852[13]-1889[14])
  • Missouri Elizabeth Martindale (1853[15]-1943[16])
  • James Austin Martindale (1856[17]-1892[18])
  • Randolph B. Martindale (1859[19]-?)

In 2002, I received an email from Nedra Eaton Queen who said there was another son, Bridges Bruce Martindale, who was born about 1838. However, I have found no other evidence of this child.

Howell is first named in the federal census in 1840, enumerated in Concord Township, Washington County, Missouri[20]; in 1850 he and his family were enumerated in Bismarck, St. Francois County, Missouri.[21] The last census on which he is found is the 1860 census; he was living in Clear Creek Township in Sevier County, Arkansas.[22]

Howell made his first land purchases in Missouri, buying 40 acres on 1 Feb 1848 in Washington County[23] and then purchasing another 40 acres just a month later in St. Francois County.[24] In 1843, he sold approximately 100 acres to John L. J. Chandler, probably in preparation for a move to Arkansas.[25] On 2 April 1860, he was issued a land patent for 40 acres in Sevier County, Arkansas.[26]

He is listed in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses as being a wagonmaker.[27]

Howell served in the Civil War, enlisting in the 2nd Arkansas Infantry on 27 December 1836. He was mustered in as a private on 14 May 1864 at Little Rock, and was promoted to corporal on the same day. He was promoted to sergeant on 12 December 1864 and mustered out 8 August 1865 at Clarksville, Arkansas.[28]

According to a pedigree chart prepared by my aunt, Dorothy Belle (Spurlock) Magee, he died in 1866 near Waldron, in Scott County, Arkansas. I have been unable to locate a burial location or any other documentation regarding his death.

My biggest research challenge with Howell B. Martindale is to determine the names of his parents. Other items I need to research:
  1. The disposition of the land he held in Sevier County, Arkansas;
  2. Further documentation of his death.
