Surname Saturday - Ancestors #34 and #35 - Parents of Ellender VICKERS

Ancestors #34 and #35 are the parents of my paternal 2nd great-grandmother Ellender Vickers.

Ellender married Ransom Spurlock reportedly in Barbour County, Alabama, in 1836. There were numerous Vickers families in southeast Alabama/southwest Georgia/northwest Florida in this general time period, but I have not been able to place Ellender in any of these families.

The clues I have to the possible identity of Ellender's parents are:

  1. In the 1850 federal census, there is a Vickers family enumerated two visits away from Ransom and Ellender (Vickers) Spurlock in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. The head of the household is Elleonder Vickers, age 68, female, no occupation, born in Georgia. Also in the household are Green Vickers (23, male, farmer, born in Georgia), Louisa Vickers (21, female, born in Georgia), Joshua Vickers (41, male, laborer, born in Georgia), and Jane Vickers (20, female, born in Georgia).
  2. In the 1840 federal census, Joshua Vickers is enumerated in Hinds County, Mississippi, as the head of household of a family two visits away from Ransom Spurlock. The enumeration includes 1 male age 10-15, 1 male age 20-30, 1 female age 10-15, and 1 female age 50-60. This seems to be the same family as the one in Louisiana in 1850. A marriage record for a Joshua Vickers and Nancy Jane Thompson is found in Hinds County, Mississippi, in 1846.
It is possible that this Elleonder Vickers is Ellender Vickers Spurlock's mother and that Joshua is her brother. Green and Louisa are likely also Ellender Vickers Spurlock's siblings, but they could be Joshua Vicker's children from a marriage prior to his 1846 marriage to Nancy Jane Thompson. Ransom and Ellender (Vickers) Spurlock used the given names Green and Joshua when naming sons: first son was named William Green and last son was named James Joshua.

I have not been able to identify these Vickers in any other records after 1850.

Years ago, I was told that Ellender Vickers Spurlock's mother was a Smith before her marriage. I have not been able to find a record of an Ellender Smith who married a Vickers.

Lot of work is needed on this brick wall....

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #33 - FNU LNU (wife of FNU Spurlock)

Ah, FNU LNU (first name unknown, last name unknown)! I am getting to some brick walls here.

Ancestor #33 would be the mother of my paternal 2nd great-grandfather Ransom Spurlock. There is some evidence that Ancestor #32, Ransom's father, may have been John Spurlock; however, I am not certain of that yet.

There is some thought that John Spurlock's wife was Sarah Avent/Avant. No marriage record has been found. There is evidence that the Avent/Avant family was in Washington County, Georgia, in the late 1700s to early 1800s. The given name Ransom is also found in the Avent/Avant family.

Not much to go on...

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #32 - FNU Spurlock

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

Ancestor #32 is the individual who is the father of ancestor #16, my paternal 2nd great-grandfather Ransom Spurlock. There are no documents giving us the identity of Ransom’s parents. I am only beginning to research this question, but I can provide some information on what others have claimed.

Ransom’s daughters, Frances Elizabeth (Spurlock) Miller and Sarah Jane (Spurlock) Duncan, lived well into the 20th century. In 1926, a newspaper columnist interviewed them and the following “history” was published:

“Mrs. Duncan’s and Mrs. Miller’s family have an unusual record for longevity, also, their grandfather, John Spurlock, a native of Illinois, was 119 when he died in Alabama where the family had moved from Illinois, they stated. Their father, Ransom Spurlock, was 104 when he died at Arcadia where the family had moved 85 years ago. Their mother, who before her marriage, was Miss Ellender Vickers, only lacked a few months reaching the century mark, and they now live with their ‘baby’ brother, J. F. Spurlock, 78 years old, five miles east of Jonesboro in Jackson parish where he farms. He is also a Presbyterian minister.”

The two sisters were WAY off base with the ages! It is believed that the John Spurlock who died in Alabama (possibly Ransom’s father) was born about 1756 (probably in North Carolina, not Illinois!) and died about 1860 at about 104 years. Ransom died in 1896; if the year of birth on his tombstone is correct, he was 89 when he died. Ellender (Vickers) Spurlock was probably closer to 90 years of age than to 100; the years on her grave marker are seriously incorrect!

When trying to determine parents of an ancestors, it is recommended that research begin where one first finds the known ancestor.

Ransom is first found in records in Barbour County, Alabama, enlisting in the Alabama militia in 1836 to serve in the Indian wars. He reported being married in Barbour County, Alabama, in 1836, but there is no record of his marriage in the county.

Barbour County was formed in 1832 from Pike County. In 1830, there is a John Spurlock enumerated in Pike County who has a male in his household of about the right age to be Ransom and who is about the right age to be the John Spurlock who died in Barbour County in about 1860. There is also a William Spurlock enumerated in Barbour County in 1830 who appears to be too young to be Ransom’s father but could be an older brother.

In 1840, John Spurlock and William Spurlock are both enumerated again in Barbour County. John has only himself and a woman of age to be his wife in his household. In addition, another younger John Spurlock and his family are enumerated in Barbour County. Ransom Spurlock is enumerated in Hinds County, Mississippi.

In 1850, William Spurlock (age 58) is enumerated in Barbour, but John Spurlock is not. There is however a John Spurlock (age 91) enumerated in Butler County, Alabama, with a younger John Spurlock, perhaps a son. By this time, Solomon Spurlock and his family appear in Barbour County.

In 1860, John Spurlock (age 104) is enumerated as a “Rev_y Soldier” in the household of Solomon Spurlock.

According to Civil War military records, one of Ransom Spurlock’s sons, Marcus D.L. Spurlock, was “sick in Barbour County.” Is it possible he was staying with family there?

Several Spurlock researchers have concluded that John Spurlock was the father of Ransom. At this point, I do not believe I have enough evidence to write a convincing proof argument. There is more research to be done.

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #31 - Rhoda Cary

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal 2nd great-grandmother Rhoda Cary was born 9 January 1833[1] in Union County, Ohio, the seventh child of Ephraim and Matilda (Gandy) Cary.

On 11 July 1849, Rhoda married Joseph Franklin in Union County, Ohio.[2] The couple had five children who lived to adulthood:
  • Ruth Franklin (1851-1914)[3] – my great-grandmother
  • Nancy Franklin (1853[4]-1875[5])
  • Richard Franklin (1856[6]-after 1880[7])
  • Fannie Franklin (1859[8]-1904[9])
  • David Franklin (1865-1932)[10]

On 21 May 1870, John B. Coats, Judge for the Probate Court of Union County, Ohio, signed an “Application for Admission” of Rhoda into the Central Lunatic Asylum in Columbus, Ohio.[11] On the same day, a “Medical Certificate” was signed by one Dr. Skidmore stating that Rhoda had been judged insane; he stated that she had been “insane for three weeks and ‘melancholic’ for five months.” The cause was specified as “probable affection [affliction?] of the lungs producing debility and loss of child producing melancholy.”[12] On 30 May 1870 Rhoda was admitted to the asylum located in Dayton, Ohio, having been taken there by Lory Ford.[13] She remained there for over two years, until she was returned to Taylor Township in Union County on 21 August 1872.[14]

Looking at the number of years between the births of Rhoda’s two youngest children, it appears that there could have been another child born between them and then one or more  children born after David. Certainly, recurrent stillbirths or children who died shortly after birth would have impacted Rhoda’s mental health. Was the lung condition possibly tuberculosis? Daughter Nancy died in 1875 from scrofula, which is defined as a tuberculosis infection the lymph nodes in the neck.[15]

Rhoda has not been found in any records after August 1872. Her husband Joseph remarried on 1 November 1877 in Marion County, Ohio.[16] It is unknown whether she died or whether they divorced. No burial location has been found. None of Rhoda’s children were living with Joseph at the time of the 1880 census.[17]

There are several opportunities for additional research:
  1. Continued research in records of Union County and Marion County, both areas in which Rhoda may have lived after her release from the asylum, to see if there is any record of death or divorce.
  2. Newspaper research in Union and Marion counties, to see if there are any references to Rhoda.
  3. Research on descendants and collateral lines to see if a living relative can be found who has more information on Rhoda’s life and death.

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #30 - Joseph Franklin

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal 2nd great-grandfather Joseph Franklin was born 25 December 1826 in Clark County, Ohio, the oldest child of Arad and Nancy (White Franklin).[1]

On 11 July 1849, Joseph married Rhoda Cary in Union County, Ohio.[2] Joseph and Rhoda had five children who lived to adulthood:
  • Ruth Franklin (1851-1914)[3] – my great-grandmother
  • Nancy Franklin (1853[4]-1875[5])
  • Richard Franklin (1856[6]-after 1880[7])
  • Fannie Franklin (1859[8]-1904[9])
  • David Franklin (1865-1932)[10]

He married second Emily Tyler on 1 November 1877 in Marion County, Ohio.[11] Two children were born of this union:
  • William Arad Franklin (1878[12]-1959[13])
  • Abi Della Franklin (1879-1935)[14]

Joseph was a laborer, sometimes making brick or tile (an industry in which several collateral families were engaged), sometimes working on a farm. There is no indication on any census record that he owned property, and he has not been found in any of the deed indexes for Union County, Ohio.

Joseph died on 12 October 1895 in Jackson Township, Paulding County, Ohio.[15] The location of his burial is unknown.

Following are opportunities for additional research:
  1. Continued research in records of Union County, Marion County, and Paulding County, all areas in which Joseph lived during his life time.
  2. Newspaper research in Marion County and Pauling County.
  3. Research on descendants and collateral lines to see if a living relative can be found who has more information on Joseph’s life.

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #29 – Nancy Caldwell

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal 2nd great-grandmother Nancy Caldwell was born 11 June 1814[1] probably in that area of Virginia that became West Virginia. Her parents are unknown.

About 1835, Nancy married David Snider. The couple had seven known children:
  • Joseph Snider (1837[2]-bef 1910[3])
  • William Snider (Abt 1840[4]-bef 1900[5])
  • Delila J. Snider (1842-1917)[6]
  • Ezekiel Snider (Abt 1846[7]-aft 1910[8])
  • David A. Snider (1848-1929)[9] – my great grandfather
  • Jasper Snider (Abt 1851[10]-aft 1897[11])
  • Francis M. Snider (1855-1917)[12]

On the 1870 federal census, Nancy is recorded as “insane.” An 1877 obituary printed by  the Marysville Tribune is transcribed on her Find A Grave Memorial; it reports she had “been afflicted for several years.”[13] I wonder what her symptoms were; it is possible that she had what would now be diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease or perhaps was depressed.

Nancy died on 5 February 1877 and is buried at Ford Cemetery in Taylor Township, Union County, Ohio.[14]

There are several opportunities for additional research:
1.      Research in Marshall County, West Virginia (previously Virginia) records to see if her parents’ identities can be determined;
2.      Research in Union County, Ohio, probate records to determine whether Nancy was ever committed to an asylum;
3.      Research in Union County death records for an official record of death; and
4.      Newspapers for other mentions.

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #28 – David Snider

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal 2nd great-grandfather David Snider was born 13 June 1810[1] probably in that area of Virginia that became West Virginia. His parents are unknown.

About 1835, David married Nancy Caldwell. The couple had seven known children:
  • Joseph Snider (1837[2]-bef 1910[3])
  • William Snider (Abt 1840[4]-bef 1900[5])
  • Delila J. Snider (1842-1917)[6]
  • Ezekiel Snider (Abt 1846[7]-aft 1910[8])
  • David A. Snider (1848-1929)[9] – my great grandfather
  • Jasper Snider (Abt 1851[10]-aft 1897[11])
  • Francis M. Snider (1855-1917)[12]

David and his family are found in 1840[13] and 1850[14] in Marshall County, Virginia; in 1850, he owned real estate valued at $1,200. In 1853, David purchased 219 acres of land in Union County, Ohio, from Thomas and Nancy Jameson for $1,478. According to the 1870 census, his real estate was then valued at $12,886 and his personal estate valued at $1,500.[15]

On each census where David is enumerated, he is listed as being employed in agriculture (1840)[16] or as a farmer (1850, [17] 1860, [18] and 1870[19]). Although Ancestry.com has some agriculture schedules digitized on their site, David does not appear on the Marshall County, Virginia, schedule for 1850 and the schedules for Ohio are not available on the site.

There are numerous references to men by the name of David Snider serving in Ohio units during the Civil War, but I have not explored them fully to determine where any of them is this David Snider.

Although I have not found David on the 1880 census in Union County, Ohio, he was the victim of horse thieves there late in 1880. According to a newspaper article, two horses were stolen by one George Cook and his son Frank![20]

David died on 4 April 1892 and is buried at Ford Cemetery in Taylor Township, Union County, Ohio.[21]

There are several opportunities for additional research:
1.      Research in Marshall County, West Virginia, for records for David, particularly deeds and census returns which may provide clues to the identity of his parents or other close relative;
2.      More research on his possible service during the Civil War;
3.      Determine whether agricultural schedules for Union County, Ohio, are available, and if so, see if David appears on them;
4.      Research in Union County death records for his death; and
