Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - The Rivers of my Ohio Ancestors

Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings has presented a map-based challenge for this week's edition of Saturday Night Genealogy Fun. The mission this week is to:

1) I posted The"Rivers of America" Map yesterday, and demonstrated how to find the downstream course of a river in the United States, or the upstream watershed area of a river. Please refer to that blog post. 2) This week, your Saturday Night Genealogy Fun mission is to make a map using the National Atlas map (at http://nationalatlas.gov/streamer/Streamer/streamer.html) showing the downstream course of a river that one of your ancestors may have traveled on. What does it tell you? What did you learn? Did they live at other places on that river, or downstream of that river?
3) Tell us about it in a blog post of your own (please show us the map you created - use an image snipping tool or take a screen shot), or make a comment here on this post, or write a Facebook status or a Google+ stream post.

Some of my maternal ancestors—the Gandy, Cary, Franklin, and Snider families—settled along Bokes Creek in Union County, Ohio. Here is the map of the downstream trace:

I was a little surprised to learn the outlet for Bokes Creek is the Gulf of Mexico.

The site allows you to generate a stream trace detail report with lots of interesting information about where the trace travels along its route. Here is some of that data for Bokes Creek:

The Snider family migrated from Ohio to Kansas in the late 1800s. It is possible that they traveled the Ohio River on their journey west.

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #28 – David Snider

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal 2^nd great-grandfather David Snider was born 13 June 1810[1] probably in that area of Virginia that became West Virginia. His parents are unknown.

About 1835, David married Nancy Caldwell. The couple had seven known children:

Joseph Snider (1837[2]-bef 1910[3])
William Snider (Abt 1840[4]-bef 1900[5])
Delila J. Snider (1842-1917)[6]
Ezekiel Snider (Abt 1846[7]-aft 1910[8])
David A. Snider (1848-1929)[9] – my great grandfather
Jasper Snider (Abt 1851[10]-aft 1897[11])
Francis M. Snider (1855-1917)[12]

David and his family are found in 1840[13] and 1850[14] in Marshall County, Virginia; in 1850, he owned real estate valued at $1,200. In 1853, David purchased 219 acres of land in Union County, Ohio, from Thomas and Nancy Jameson for $1,478. According to the 1870 census, his real estate was then valued at $12,886 and his personal estate valued at $1,500.[15]

On each census where David is enumerated, he is listed as being employed in agriculture (1840)[16] or as a farmer (1850, [17] 1860, [18] and 1870[19]). Although Ancestry.com has some agriculture schedules digitized on their site, David does not appear on the Marshall County, Virginia, schedule for 1850 and the schedules for Ohio are not available on the site.

There are numerous references to men by the name of David Snider serving in Ohio units during the Civil War, but I have not explored them fully to determine where any of them is this David Snider.

Although I have not found David on the 1880 census in Union County, Ohio, he was the victim of horse thieves there late in 1880. According to a newspaper article, two horses were stolen by one George Cook and his son Frank![20]

David died on 4 April 1892 and is buried at Ford Cemetery in Taylor Township, Union County, Ohio.[21]

There are several opportunities for additional research:

1. Research in Marshall County, West Virginia, for records for David, particularly deeds and census returns which may provide clues to the identity of his parents or other close relative;

2. More research on his possible service during the Civil War;

3. Determine whether agricultural schedules for Union County, Ohio, are available, and if so, see if David appears on them;

4. Research in Union County death records for his death; and

5. Newspapers for other mentions of his activities.

Those Darned Horse Thieves!

I’ve heard rumors that there were horse thieves in my family, but in this case, my maternal 2^nd great-grandfather David Snider was the victim of the thieves! I will have to delve into Union County, Ohio, court records to see what more I can learn about the incident reported in this newspaper article.

“—George Cook and son Frank, the latter aged about thirteen years, of Odin, Ills., who had been visiting in this vicinity for a few days, were arrested near Zanesville, Ohio, and brought to Marysville, on Monday last, by Marshal Bonnett, for stealing a pair of horses from David Snider, a farmer living on Bokes Creek, southwest of town. The parties to whom Cook had sold the horses, near Zanesville, suspicioned that the horses had been stolen, from the small sum at which they were offered, and arrested Cook and son after an exciting race. The preliminary trial was held before Esquire Garrard in Marysville, on Monday, and both parties were bound over to court. This is not Cook's first offense, and it is likely that he will be dealt with to the full extent of the law. The boy will no doubt be sent to the Reform School.”

Sunday's Obituary - Ellison Snider

Ellison Snider, my first cousin twice removed, died 18 December 1963 in Marysville, Union County, Ohio.

“Ellison Snider

Found Dead At

Home Thursday

Ellison Snider, 75, 118 E. Eighth St., died sometime in the night Wednesday.

Marysville police discovered the body about 10:30 a.m. Thursday when they were called by neighbors who feared something was wrong when they saw no activity about the house. He lived alone and was the last member of his family.

A retired employee of the former Davis Chair Factory, he was born June 27, 1888, in Union County to Joseph and Melissa (Blue) Snider.

He was a member of the First Methodist Church, a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Faulkner Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Tropf officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home any time.”

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #14 - David A. Snider

My maternal great-grandfather David A. SNIDER was born 18 July 1848, in that area of Virginia that is now West Virginia.[1] He was the fifth child born to David and Nancy (CALDWELL) SNIDER.[2]

While David was still a young boy, the family moved to Union County, Ohio.[3]

David married Ruth Franklin on 5 January 1871 Union County.[4] To their union were born eleven children:

Omer Roy (1873-before 1900)[6]
Ottous Adelbert (1876-1942)[7]
Myrtle Arminta (1878-1958)[8] – my grandmother
Byron Lee (1880-1969)[9]
Wilbur Grey (1884-1954)

Nettie (1888-?)
William L. (1890-?)
Lester Evan (1893-1969)[11]
Roy (1896-?)

At some point after the 1880 census,[12] the family moved to the southeastern area of Kansas. David was a farmer, although there is an indication that he worked for a railroad later in life.

David remained in Kansas until his death on 30 July 1929 where he is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas.[13]

Here are some of the areas in which I would like to do further research:

Although I have researched the Snider family in Union County, Ohio, I did not find any land records that could be attributed to David; I need to research in records for Labette and Neosho counties in Kansas to see if I can find anything.
I would like to determine whether any newspapers of the area have been digitized for possible research.
I know that several of his children remained in the Parsons, Kansas area, and I would like to locate living descendants if possible.

Amanuensis Monday - Ford-Snider Deed 1870

On his TransylvanianDutch blog, John Newmark defines an amanuensis as “a person employed to write out what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.” For more information about this daily blogging prompt, see John’s post Amanuensis – Why?.

In this deed, Lory Ford and his wife conveyed just one acre of land to my maternal 2^nd great-grandfather David Snider. The land description refers to a corner of David Snider’s land so this one acre was adjacent land. David’s daughter, Delilah, was married to Henry Ford; I’m not sure of what relationship there may be between him and Lory Ford. In the recorder’s certification at the end of the deed, the recorder notes that a duly cancelled revenue stamp was affixed to the deed indicating that appropriate taxes had been paid on the transaction. First time I’ve seen that!

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #7 - Myrtle Arminta SNIDER

My maternal grandmother, Myrtle Arminta SNIDER, was born 26 January 1878 in Ohio,[1] the oldest daughter of David A. and Ruth (FRANKLIN) SNIDER.[2]

On 26 September 1897, she married William Lee YAWMAN in Lincoln Township, Neosho County, Kansas.[3] William and Myrtle had eight children:

Joyce Opal YAWMAN (1899-1967)[4]
Eunice Evangeline YAWMAN (1901-1999)[5]
Hazel Agnes YAWMAN (1904-1993)[6]
Juanita Marie YAWMAN (1907-2004)[7]
Myrtle Gertrude YAWMAN (1909-19995)[8]
Clarence Leonard YAWMAN (1912-1912)[9]
William Howard YAWMAN (1914-1990)[10]
Beaulah Belle YAWMAN (1915-1999)[11]

After William and Myrtle married, they lived in the southeastern Kansas counties of Labette and Crawford.[12]^,
[13] Between 1915 and 1920, they moved to Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.[14] To my knowledge, they remained in Kansas City until about 1939, when they moved to California.[15] William and Myrtle lived at 3304 Freer, El Monte (in Los Angeles County) from about 1940 until his death.[16] Sometime after William’s death, Myrtle moved to Washington where she lived with her daughter Joyce.[17]

Myrtle died on 20 June 1958 in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington, and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California.[18]

While I have the basic research covered for Myrtle, there are additional areas I need to research:

1. Land and property records in the counties in which she and William lived.

2. Newspapers for communities in which they lived.

My brother Arny had several photos of my grandparents that I scanned when I visited him last fall. I have an original of their wedding picture which I have scanned and shared with my siblings.

My grandmother was an accomplished seamstress, and I am fortunate to have in my possession a skirt that she made for my oldest sister sometime in the early 1950s. I seem to recall hearing that she made her own wedding dress, but I need to verify that with someone—perhaps my older sister will know.

Arny told me that Grandma Yawman loved to listen to the Los Angeles Angels’ baseball games on the radio. (The Angels were a farm team at the time.) She was not happy when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, because she could no longer hear the Angels’ games!
