Sunday's Obituary - Mrs. Nancy E. Yawman

Nancy E. Yawman, one of my maternal great-grandmothers, died on July 14, 1919. Her obituary provided information about her religious affiliation, something I did not know. I found it interesting that they printed information on when her body was shipped from the place of death (Miami, Oklahoma) to the burial location (Parsons, Kansas) and that her son accompanied the body.

“MRS. NANCY YAWMAN BURIED IN PARSONS

Mrs. Nancy E. Yawman, who died at the home of her son John Yawman Tuesday, was buried in Parsons, Wednesday afternoon. The body was shipped Tuesday. John Yawman accompanied the body to Parsons.

Mrs. Yawman has been a member of the Baptist church here and is well known. Her 73d birthday was celebrated at the home about four weeks ago.”

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #24 – Andrew Yawman

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal 2nd great-grandfather Andrew Yawman was born 29 March 1810 in Schmittviller in the Alsace Lorraine region of France. His parents were Philip and Magdalena (Hoffman) Jamann.[1]

On 24 June 1834, Andrew married Catherine Sitterly in Schenectady, Albany County, New York.[2] The couple had eight known children:
  • William A. Yawman (1831[3]-1895[4])
  • Mary Elizabeth Yawman (1835[5]-1911[6])
  • Catherine “Kate” Yawman (1838[7]-1922[8])
  • Apalonia “Abbie” Yawman (1840[9]-1919[10])
  • Michael H. Yawman (1842[11]-1913[12]) – my great-grandfather
  • Deborah Anna Mary Yawman (1845[13]-1927[14])
  • George Nicholas Yawman (1847[15]-bef 1860[16])
  • Rebecca Mary Yawman (1853[17]-?)

Andrew is my most recent immigrant ancestor having arrived in New York with his parents and brothers in 1832.[18] His parents died in the cholera epidemic that year.

Andrew appeared on the 1835 New York state census in Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York,[19] but by the 1840 U.S. Census had moved west to Rochester, Monroe County, New York.[20]

In 1842, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. The Yawman family considered themselves German; but when Andrew naturalized he had to renounce his allegiance to the King of France.[21] At the time of his naturalization, Alsace-Lorraine was under French control.

By 1857, Andrew and his family had moved even further west – to Saint Paul, in Ramsey County, Minnesota.[22] They were in Minnesota for the 1860 census,[23] but by 1863 were in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[24] Based on information from Chicago city directories, it appears that Andrew’s residence and business were in the path of the Great Fire.[25] I wrote about the possible impact of the fire on the Yawman’s in a previous blog post. It appears the family moved back to Minnesota shortly after the fire as Andrew is not found in the Chicago city directories after 1871.

Andrew took advantage of the U.S. Homestead Act to acquire 155 acres of land in Pipestone County, Minnesota, the patent on the land being granted on 31 May 1884.[26] However, he did not stay long in Minnesota, moving to Denison, Grayson County, Texas, by 1887.[27]

The census records indicate that Andrew was engaged in business as a milliner during his time in Rochester and in Saint Paul; daughters Kate, Apalonia, and Rebecca all worked as milliners as well. During the time Andrew was in Chicago, he worked as a watchman for a railroad,[28] as a salesman for his son-in-law Lee M. Phillips,[29] and as a clerk for daughter Rebecca’s grocery business.[30] The only time he was enumerated as a farmer was in Pipestone County, Minnesota, in 1880.

Andrew died on 24 December 1891 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Denison, Grayson County, Texas.[31] A transcription and image of his obituary from the Dallas Morning News can be found here.

Over the years, I have accumulated quite a lot of information about Andrew Yawman’s life, but there is more that I would like to find and learn:
  1. I need to obtain records for Andrew’s birth or baptism and his marriage to Catherine Sitterly; likely these will be found in church records.
  2. I have not been able to locate documentation of Andrew’s arrival in the United States with his parents and brothers.
  3. I’d like to have more information and understanding of why Andrew moved so much, and I’m curious as to why he went to Minnesota, then back to Chicago, and to Minnesota again.
  4. One of my cousins has done a great deal of research on the Yawman family; perhaps I can get more information from him.

I Found Mama in the 1940 Census (and Grandma and Grandpa!)

I had done my homework so I knew my mother’s address in 1940: 3526 Farago, El Monte, Los Angeles County, California. I had figured out that was in Enumeration District 19-156, so once the 1940 census images became available on Ancestry.com, I knew just where to go! It didn’t take long to find her on Sheet 16A, along with her first husband, Archie Sherrell, and two of my older siblings, Deanna and Arnold (Arny):

Source: 1940 U.S. Census, Los Angeles County, California, population schedule,
El Monte Judicial Township, Enumeration District 19-156, Sheet 16A,
household number 361, Archie Sherrell; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com :
accessed 3 April 2012); citing NARA microfilm number T627.

I knew that my Aunt Jean lived next door to Mama at that time and she and her family were enumerated beginning on the previous page.

Since this was the first census on which my brother appeared, I emailed him a copy of the page. He remembers the house and living next door to Aunt Jean and her children.

Mama had told me that she and Archie were married in 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri, so I expected that, in all likelihood, they were living there, and I was right. However, their marriage license was issued in Johnson County, Missouri, and that had puzzled me. I think I found the answer to that question. Archie’s mother, Lola Carson, was living with them in 1940, and in 1935, she was living in Johnson County, Missouri!

Things must have been pretty tight financially. According to the census, Archie was a laborer in construction but had been unemployed for 52 weeks. Having two young children, Mama didn’t work. Lola had been a cook on a ranch, but had been unemployed for 36 weeks. Their total combined income in 1939 was less than $700!

I also had my Yawman grandparents’ address: 3304 Freer in El Monte. I wasn’t sure which Enumeration District that would be in, but had narrowed down to the same as my mother and one other. So after I found Mama, I just kept going through the pages. Two pages later, I found my grandparents on Sheet 17A:

Source: 1940 U.S. Census, Los Angeles County, California, population schedule,
El Monte Judicial Township, Enumeration District 19-156, Sheet 17A,
household number 387, William Yawman; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com :
accessed 3 April 2012); citing NARA microfilm number T627.

Grandpa Yawman was enumerated on line 14 so the supplementary questions were answered. But there was nothing there that I didn’t already know!

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #12 – Michael Heman Yawman

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. If you discovered this post through a search engine and find one of your ancestors listed here, please leave a comment to let me know.

My maternal great-grandfather Michael Heman YAWMAN was born 18 October 1842, in Rochester, Monroe County, New York,[1] the fifth child of Andrew and Catherine (SITTERLY) YAWMAN.[2]

The Yawman family had moved to Minnesota by 1857[3] and that is where Michael spent his late teens and early adulthood.[4]

During the Civil War, he served as a private in the 1st Minnesota Infantry and on 21 July 1861 was mistakenly reported as being killed in action during the Battle of Bull Run. It was later reported that he had been taken prisoner by the Confederate army. He was part of a prisoner exchange which took place just prior to the battle at Gettysburg in 1863. He was reported as a deserter as of July 31st of that year.[5] I have not ordered Michael’s military records hoping they will soon be available online! My cousin Gary Yawman (who has ordered the records) reports that Michael spent 11 months in Libby Prison before his exchange back to the Union army.

Following the war, Michael married Nancy Burton on 12 June 1866 at Kingston in Meeker County, Minnesota.[6] Michael and Nancy had eleven children:
  • James Andrew (1867-1911)[7]
  • Catherine Margaret (1869-after 1900)[8]
  • William Lee (1870-1948)[9] – my grandfather
  • Chris Bell (1872-before 1880)[10]
  • Mary Elizabeth (1874-unknown)[11]
  • Michael Hamen (1875-1922)
  • Nora Yawman (1878-1968)
  • Martha Henrietta (1879-1948)
  • Charles Frederick (1881-1956)[12]
  • Georgia An (1882-1968)[13]
  • John Joseph (1885-1959)

The family appears to have moved frequently. The first two children are reported to have been born in Minnesota. On 2 June 1870, the family was enumerated in Union Township, Union County, Iowa[14]; however, their third child, William, is reported to have been born in Missouri.  In 1875, they were in Swan Lake, Meeker County, Minnesota.[15] By 1880, they were in Denison, Grayson County, Texas.[16] The final move by 1895 was to Parsons, Labette County, Kansas,[17] where Michael remained until his death.

Michael made his living as a shoemaker. But in 1886 he was appointed chief of the Denison (TX) Fire Department![18]

Michael died on 8 January 1913 and was buried on 11 January 1913[19] at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas.[20]

Although I have quite a bit of information on this Yawman family, there are still areas for further research:
  • I hope that the records for Michael’s military service and pension application are digitized soon. I would prefer not to order them from NARA as it is becoming increasing expensive to get these records.
  • Hopefully I will be able to find more tidbits of information about his life from additional newspaper research.
  • I definitely need to spend some time conducting further research on his children.
