Surname Saturday - Ancestor #14 - David A. Snider

One of my goals for 2012 is to use the Surname Saturday blogging prompt as a way to assure that I spend some time researching each of my family lines and that I have appropriate source citations for the genealogical facts related to my ancestors. I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. My maternal great-grandfather David A. SNIDER was born 18 July 1848, in that area of Virginia that is now West Virginia.[1] He was the fifth child born to David and Nancy (CALDWELL) SNIDER.[2]

While David was still a young boy, the family moved to Union County, Ohio.[3]

David married Ruth Franklin on 5 January 1871 Union County.[4] To their union were born eleven children:

• Lawrence W. (1871-?)[5]
• Omer Roy (1873-before 1900)[6]
• Ottous Adelbert (1876-1942)[7]
• Myrtle Arminta (1878-1958)[8] – my grandmother
• Byron Lee (1880-1969)[9]
• Wilbur Grey (1884-1954)
• Ernest A. (1886-1978)[10]
• Nettie (1888-?)
• William L. (1890-?)
• Lester Evan (1893-1969)[11]
• Roy (1896-?)

At some point after the 1880 census,[12] the family moved to the southeastern area of Kansas. David was a farmer, although there is an indication that he worked for a railroad later in life.

David remained in Kansas until his death on 30 July 1929 where he is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas.[13]

Here are some of the areas in which I would like to do further research:

• Although I have researched the Snider family in Union County, Ohio, I did not find any land records that could be attributed to David; I need to research in records for Labette and Neosho counties in Kansas to see if I can find anything.
• I would like to determine whether any newspapers of the area have been digitized for possible research.
• I know that several of his children remained in the Parsons, Kansas area, and I would like to locate living descendants if possible.

Now You See Them, Now You Don’t!

Today is Smoke and Mirrors Day and I want to honor those ancestors who have the strange habit of appearing in one place, disappearing and then re-appearing in an entirely different location, leaving few records to help me figure out what happened. Tracking down these ancestors is how I become a better genealogist!

I do not know who the Spurlock was whose entertainment is featured in the poster below, but he (or she) must be related to me and my elusive ancestors!

[I purchased this poster on Ebay several years ago. It actually measures about 10½ x 20 inches. I used my FlipPal mobile scanner to scan it; it took 15 scans to get the entire image. Then I used the stitching software that came with the scanner to put it all back together. A little cleaning up of the edges in a photo editing software, and PRESTO – JUST LIKE MAGIC! – I had the image above to use for this blog post. Amanuensis Monday - Ford-Snider Deed 1870

On his TransylvanianDutch blog, John Newmark defines an amanuensis as “a person employed to write out what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.” For more information about this daily blogging prompt, see John’s post Amanuensis – Why?.

In this deed, Lory Ford and his wife conveyed just one acre of land to my maternal 2^nd great-grandfather David Snider. The land description refers to a corner of David Snider’s land so this one acre was adjacent land. David’s daughter, Delilah, was married to Henry Ford; I’m not sure of what relationship there may be between him and Lory Ford. In the recorder’s certification at the end of the deed, the recorder notes that a duly cancelled revenue stamp was affixed to the deed indicating that appropriate taxes had been paid on the transaction. First time I’ve seen that!

Sunday's Obituary - Snowdie (Chambers) Martindale

Snowdie (Chambers) Martindale married Walter I. Martindale (my paternal grand-uncle) in 1903. She died 31 January 1946 in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

“Mrs. Martindale Succumbs Here

Mrs. Snowdie Martindale, of 1309 Melbourne, 62-year-old mother of City Detective A. C. Martindale, died at 10:45 p. m. Thursday at a Houston Hospital.

Besides her son, she is survived by her husband, Walter Martindale; another son, D. H. Martindale; five daughters, Mrs. Marie Rosson, Mrs. Lydia Tripp, Mrs. Doris Sisk, Mrs. Maude Knast and Mrs. Waltrine Hartnett, all of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Lula Faulk of Clio, Ala., and nine grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Heights funeral home.”

Surname Saturday - Ancestor #12 - Nancy Elgin Burton

My maternal great-grandmother Nancy Elgin Burton was born 9 June 1846, in Kentucky,[1]  the oldest child of James H. and Margaret (PARSONS) BURTON.[2]

The Burton family resided in Floyd County, Kentucky, in 1860,[3] but following the Civil War moved to Minnesota where Nancy married Michael Yawman on 12 June 1866 at Kingston in Meeker County, Minnesota.[4]

Michael and Nancy had eleven children:

• James Andrew (1867-1911)[5]
• Catherine Margaret (1869-after 1900)[6]
• William Lee (1870-1948)[7] – my grandfather
• Chris Bell (1872-before 1880)[8]
• Mary Elizabeth (1874-unknown)[9]
• Michael Hamen (1875-1922)
• Nora Yawman (1878-1968)
• Martha Henrietta (1879-1948)
• Charles Frederick (1881-1956)[10]
• Georgia An (1882-1968)[11]
• John Joseph (1885-1959)

Nancy died on 14 July 1919 in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and was buried on 16 July 1919[12] at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas.[13]

Like most of my female ancestors, I know very little about Nancy’s life. I hope I can glean additional information through my continued research into the lives of her husband and children.

Amanuensis Monday - Franklin-Degood Deed - 1873

On his TransylvanianDutch blog, John Newmark defines an amanuensis as “a person employed to write out what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.” For more information about this daily blogging prompt, see John’s post Amanuensis – Why?.

Here is another deed executed by Arad W. Franklin (my maternal 2^nd great-granduncle) and his wife Nannie for the sale of property in Union County, Ohio. I am not sure whether Mr. Degood is a Wilber or a William, as both names are used in this deed.

The land description in this deed notes that the parcel is part of a survey in the Virginia Military District, an area of land reserved by the State of Virginia for payment for services of Revolutionary War Soldiers. The description also names several roads which should make locating the property on a map fairly easy, but I haven’t yet done that.

In this deed, Nannie releases her dower right, something I do not remember seeing in other deeds I have transcribed so far.

And bounded as follows on the north by the Delaware and Bellfountain State Road, on the west by the Schoolhouse Lot and the Franklin Road on south by Land owned by David Mclain, and on the East by Land now owned by Wilber Degood containing Sixteen and three fourths acres more or less.

To Have and to Hold said premises, with all the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging to the said Wilber Degood his heirs and Assigns forever. Sunday's Obituary - Alma B. Thompson

Alma B. Thompson was married to Edwin Thompson (my first cousin, once removed) in 1925.  She died 10 December 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri.

“THOMPSON—Mrs. Alma B. Thompson, wife of Edwin Thompson of 6718 Virginia avenue, died at 4 p. m., Tuesday, Dec. 10. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock this (Friday) morning from the Southern funeral home, 6827 Michigan avenue. Services are to be conducted in the Haven Street Methodist church. The body will be taken to St. Clair, Mo., for burial.

Mrs. Thompson was mother of Robert Thompson. She was a daughter of Mrs. Maude Boothe, and sister to Williard Boothe.”

Surname Saturday – Ancestor #12 – Michael Heman Yawman

I’ve decided to use my ahnentafel report and work back through the generations starting with my grandparents, writing a summary of each ancestor. My maternal great-grandfather Michael Heman YAWMAN was born 18 October 1842, in Rochester, Monroe County, New York,[1] the fifth child of Andrew and Catherine (SITTERLY) YAWMAN.[2]

The Yawman family had moved to Minnesota by 1857[3] and that is where Michael spent his late teens and early adulthood.[4]

During the Civil War, he served as a private in the 1^st Minnesota Infantry and on 21 July 1861 was mistakenly reported as being killed in action during the Battle of Bull Run. It was later reported that he had been taken prisoner by the Confederate army. He was part of a prisoner exchange which took place just prior to the battle at Gettysburg in 1863. He was reported as a deserter as of July 31^st of that year.[5] I have not ordered Michael’s military records hoping they will soon be available online! My cousin Gary Yawman (who has ordered the records) reports that Michael spent 11 months in Libby Prison before his exchange back to the Union army.

Following the war, Michael married Nancy Burton on 12 June 1866 at Kingston in Meeker County, Minnesota.[6] Michael and Nancy had eleven children:

The family appears to have moved frequently. The first two children are reported to have been born in Minnesota. On 2 June 1870, the family was enumerated in Union Township, Union County, Iowa[14]; however, their third child, William, is reported to have been born in Missouri.  In 1875, they were in Swan Lake, Meeker County, Minnesota.[15] By 1880, they were in Denison, Grayson County, Texas.[16] The final move by 1895 was to Parsons, Labette County, Kansas,[17] where Michael remained until his death.

Michael made his living as a shoemaker. But in 1886 he was appointed chief of the Denison (TX) Fire Department![18]

Michael died on 8 January 1913 and was buried on 11 January 1913[19] at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas.[20]

Although I have quite a bit of information on this Yawman family, there are still areas for further research:

• I hope that the records for Michael’s military service and pension application are digitized soon. I would prefer not to order them from NARA as it is becoming increasing expensive to get these records.
• Hopefully I will be able to find more tidbits of information about his life from additional newspaper research.
• I definitely need to spend some time conducting further research on his children.
